Port Tobacco Laboratory Opporutunity

Wednesdays, October 31 through November 28, 2007
9 AM to 3 PM

The Port Tobacco Archaeological Project had a very successful volunteer weekend. For the hard work, camaraderie, and enthusiasm of the 40 to 50 volunteers who joined us on October 19-21, Dr. Charlie Hall and the core volunteer group that has been helping us since late summer, April and I and the rest of the project team are grateful. We exceeded expectations for fieldwork and found some really neat sites.

As a result of our efforts, we have accumulated a large number of objects that have to be cleaned and catalogued before we can complete the report. To handle the large volume of material, the Maryland Historical Trust has allocated the project a generous amount of space at the Crownsville lab (Bruce Thompson’s office and venue for the Tuesday volunteer labwork). We have arranged a volunteer lab day for Wednesdays for the next four weeks, starting October 31 and running 9AM to 3PM. We realize that many cannot get there during the week, but weekend access simply isn’t feasible. If you can help us out, please call Jim Gibb at 443.482.9593, or e-mail him at JamesGGibb@comcast.net. Be sure to check out the Port Tobacco page on the website, www.gibbarchaeology.org under the discoveries tab, as well as the project blog, accessible from that page.

CAT candidates: this is an opportunity to fulfill some of your requirements. Non-CATs are welcome as well. We expect to set up a historic ceramics workshop based on the materials that we have recovered from Port Tobacco.

Also, for those in the CAT program who would like to communicate readily with your fellows, share ideas, and remain abreast of workshop opportunities, we encourage you to join the yahoo group set up by Tom. Anyone with an interest in Maryland archeology is welcome to join as well. While it is set up to be spam free, if you don't want additional emails you can just access it directly on its website: http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/MDcat/ or subscribe by sending an email to MDcat-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. Needless to say, its success depends on participation.
